Remember that Valentine’s Simpsons episode? When Ralph Wiggum took the words “I Choo Choose You” to heart from a Valentine’s card. He got it from Lisa and he fell in love with her, even though it was meant to be innocent.
Oh I can relate to this episode so much. I recall my first Valentine’s day in Canada. I was in grade school at the time and the teacher said it’s customary to hand out cards to everyone.
My mom bought a bunch of cards with pre-made sayings and I didn’t really care what was on them. I just wrote my classmates names and handed them out.
The next day at school when we distributed the cards I was wondering why kids were giggling. Then I hear, “Lorena, do you really ‘Wanna be his Valentine’s”…ooohhhh”. I was puzzled, I guess the cards had words like “Be my Valentine”. I later found out that the boy they were teasing me about had a crush on me.
It didn’t really upset me, but I know when I choose cards for my own kids now, I do pay attention. I don’t want them to be confused or teased like that. Hey, that card probably could have said “Merry Christmas” and I’d still get teased…LOL.
We all have different ways of receiving messages. This little lesson taught me that people will read more into things than others. Know your audience.
Being in the business of design and communication. I understand the power words have and the impact they make.
Have you found yourself cherishing a card for its words? It might have just had a signature — but you hold on to it because it had the exact things you wanted to hear from that person.
Nowadays, I still add a personalized handwritten note when I sign a card. That added thought avoids any confusion. Can you relate? Do you have special saved cards stashed away? I know I do.
As inspired by this post I decided to create something for my kids. (Oh some still want Valentine’s Cards that have Paw Patrol or PJ Masks on them. Luckily, I’ve convinced one of them to use these).
Since Pencils are always fun and I’m trying to encourage them to write I created these “Punny” tags. “You’ve got the ‘Write’ Stuff”, “You’re all Write” “Just Write” with a place for the pencil. It’s a FREE downloadable for you. Just click here .
