Baby keepsakes, how much should I do? Tangible vs. digital

It’s so much easier nowadays to snap a shot, document your daily activities right in the palm of your hands. Leaving you with a keepsake all the time. #Poweroftechnology But do you wonder if there’s still a point to printing things or is the cloud enough?

When I first got pregnant we received albums and books about baby’s first year. Being a new expectant mother, I dreamt of filling it up, I was fortunate that I kept some thoughts in a journal. When my baby was born I printed a few photos and wrote in the book but any new mom will tell you that these keepsake albums are a lot of work and you’re busy enough keeping a little human alive this isn’t your main priority.

I suggest, do both.

Use technology to your advantage. Start with a letter to baby (use Google Docs, journal and keep taking the photos and videos.

(Tip: When capturing a moment on video, watch beyond the viewfinder not through it. I say this after I watched my daughters perform at their recital – I caught myself watching through the viewfinder but peeking at the real thing was so much better…live the moment – if you’re worried about the video being shaky, a pro tip is to hold your arm close to your body not extended, it keeps it steady).

They will ask.

My eldest, Julia, had a school project which asked about her birth details. I was happy to be able to present her with something. She ran to me with a smile from ear to ear, excited about what she found. I was teary eyed watching her read the dedications we had on her first birthday card and baby book. 😭. Camryn (my second child) found her album and can’t get enough of printing more. If you have more than one child, still keep doing what you can… they too will ask.

Work together

Don’t forget you can also work on new keepsake memories together, I wrote about a writing project we still continue to this day, read about that here. Parents.com also has a wonderful article about other creative ways to preserve memories.

I suggested having digital files and physical items because as your child grows he/she will discover in different ways. Just as my Julia found her album, one day they will be reading this blog and know that their mama found it important to share about life and goodness in this way. This will remain and what story will you share to your own.

Keep creating from your heart.
